now... we are learning about topic sentence, main idea and
supporting sentence.
And... let’s get start it :)
paragraph - a series of sentences, ranging in number,
focused on the development of a specific topic.
topic sentence - sentences that have the main idea of having a topic and controlling idea in a paragraph. Usually found at the beginning of the paragraph.Topic sentences are
often called main sentences, central sentences and also thesis sentences. This
sentence is a very important sentence, because it includes the paragraphs.
A main idea - the important information that tells
more about the overall idea of a paragraph or section of a text. The
author can locate the main idea in different places within a paragraph. The
main idea is usually a sentence, and it is usually the first sentence. The
writer then uses the rest of the paragraph to support the main idea.
supporting sentence - these are the sentences within a
paragraph that support the topic sentence (therefore, the main idea of that
paragraph). These sentences could include examples, direct quotes,
explanations, and details.
The characteristic of topic of sentences:
- The
main sentence can stand alone and have a clear meaning, no conjunction is
needed
- The
main sentence is usually at the beginning of the paragraph (deductive).
However, sometimes it is at the end of the paragraph (inductive)
The characteristic of supporting sentence:
- Often
a sentence that can not stand alone
- The
meaning of the sentence is clear after being connected with another sentence in
one paragraph
- The
contents are in the form of details, information, examples, and othe data that
support the topic sentence
The characteristic of main idea:
- Main
ideas must be contained in the complete sentence ,which consists of subjects
and predicates.
- Main
ideas are usually located at the beginning, middle, or even in the
end a paragraph.
KINDS OF TOPIC SENTENCE :
- Disclosing
Deductive Ideas: Putting Topic Sentences in the Beginning.
Topic sentences can be placed at the beginning of the
paragraph. That is, an important idea (principal) is placed at the beginning
and followed by an explanation. The location of the topic sentence at the
beginning can make it easier for the reader to find the idea of the main
paragraph.
- Expressing
Ideas Inductively: Putting the Topic Sentences at the End
Expressing ideas can begin with examples or evidence. These
examples are used to give an initial description and then followed by a
conclusion sentence. This conclusion sentence is called the topic sentence
- Disclosing
Deductive-Inductive Ideas: Meeting Topic Sentences at the Beginning and at
the End
Besides being placed at the beginning or at the end of the
paragraph, the topic sentence can also be placed at the beginning and end
together as the paragraph below.
KINDS OF SUPPORTINNG SENTENCE :
Major supporting sentence: sentences that will explain,
develop, add support from the main sentence
Minor supporting sentence : sentences that will give and
information, for example, are more detailed than what has been explained from
the major supporting sentence. the main ideas will be clearer
